Hope You Have a "BALL" Summer Gift For Students (& a GIVEAWAY)!
The end of the school year is hard. I mean, on top of all the teacher stuff, like paperwork, folders, files, documentation, grades, and so on and so forth, you have the class stuff, too! And, I'll be honest, most years it's kind of sad. Even those tough years can get me a little blue in the end, too. We spend 9 months in a room with 20+ kiddos, each and every day, and then, all of a sudden, they're not going to be ours anymore. It's certainly a weird feeling that I do believe no other profession experiences.
So, end of year activities are always fun. We always complete a "Memory Book", do other fun Summer activities, travel to other 2nd grade rooms to sign yearbooks, and much more. But, for the past two years, I've also been partaking in a few, special "End of Year" gifts which are both meaningful to me (and the kiddos, too!) and fun!
![]() |
| You can find this fun activity with more info on what's included here on TpT! |
We unwrap our beach balls, and I give the students about 5-10 minutes and ONE section (generally the white one) to write the name LARGELY and doodle with sharpies. I try to spread out the colors of sharpies, and they share at their tables.
After the students have had ample time to "doodle", we all choose one color sharpie, then play "scoot" with our signatures! For those of you who are unfamiliar, basically we start out at our desks, then SCOOT to the next "stop" (desk), where we will sign out names, put our sharpies up in the air to signal we're ready to move, then SCOOT again! This continues until we're all done signing and return back at our own desk.
After we finish signing, the balls get returned to me, I put them in a large paper bag (paper grocery bag is a great size), and store them away until I can add the rest of the "gift". What's the rest, you ask? Well, of course, it's the little booklet that you can find on TpT to accompany the beach ball, BUT, there's also a 2nd part to my gift each year...
**Want to win a free copy of my "Hope You Have a "BALL" Summer Gift"? See if you can GUESS what else goes into the paper bags for my end of year gifts. I'll give you a clue...there are 3 other parts! The first 3 people to correctly guess one part (that hasn't already been guessed!) will WIN a FREE copy of my TpT file!!! Woo-Hoo! So, whatcha waiting for? Start guessing!!! :) I'll be back soon to post "part 2" of what goes in the bag!

TN Sale and Oriental Trading GC Giveaway for Teacher Appreciation Week!
Let's face it, as teachers, sometimes we don't quite "feel the love" each and every day. Stress from our kiddos, stress from parents, stress from our jobs, stress from our own families...you name it, it's there. BUT, are you ready for that one week a year that is devoted soley to our appreciation?!
While, unfortunately, our school PTA is choosing to celebrate our "teacher appreciation week" way later than the rest of the world, I can still participate in (and enjoy!) the national actual celebration. And, what's a better way to celebrate than with a SALE and a GIVEAWAY!?!
Click on over to Teacher's Notebook for their Teacher Appreciation Sale:

AND, don't forget to swing by and enter for a chance to win an Oriental Trading Gift Card! (Or don't...so there will be more chances for me! JK!)

Gail Gibbons and Seymour Simon (AND A GIVEAWAY!!!)
As you know, we're into our "Author's Study" unit at the moment. We always have done a week about Gail Gibbons-- let's face it, the woman is an amazing writer, and her books are SO very 2nd grade "friendly". The kiddos LOVE to read her books, and they can learn lots of facts without feeling so overwhelmed with a non-fiction book.
Each year, along with studying her in "Reading", we also use her an inspiration in our writing. It is very simple for students to mimic her page layout, with a few lines of factual text and the bottom, an accurate illustration at the top, with a caption, and of course, heading! The page we use is the single page "Authors as Mentors: Write Like Gail Gibbons" sheet that you can see and download from TpT. It is a stress free (and fun) assignment that students can easily complete in one week! :)
This year, though, we also threw in Seymour Simon to the week's studies. He, too, is a great non-fiction author, and while his books differ in the amount of text (and information!) and the photographs, it's still nice to let students see the varying non-fiction texts.
In fact, my students completed great venn diagrams comparing and contrasting the two authors (very easily on their own, too, I might add!).
ANNNND, the best part of the week, you may ask? WEEEELLLLL, it HAS to be the fact that reading, writing, AND social studies/science were all so easily integrated! That's right...our "Natural Disasters/Natural Hazards" unit fit so well in with reading Gail Gibbons and Seymour Simon books, since they both have several non-fiction texts about topics such as hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.
So, on top of having the phenominal books to get information out of, my students could then apply that information to many of the graphic organizers in my Natural Disaster Pack! How amazing is that? Let me just say, it totally made for many seamless transitions throughout the week, and my students loved every minute of it!
Okay, you've made it through the end...now the fun part: the giveaway!!! The FIRST TWO PEOPLE to leave a comment about their favorite Gail Gibbons book to read to their class (or to use while teaching) will win a FREE copy of the "Authors as Mentors: Write Like Gail Gibbons" handout. Simply remember to include your email at the bottom of your coment, and I'll try to get it to you ASAP! :)

Goin' on a VACA & Giving YOU a GIVEAWAY!
Tomorrow, after my 3rd straight day of summertime workshops, I'm heading out to the fabulous Cedar Creek Lake for a little mini vaca. (For those of you who aren't from Texas, or even if you are and you don't know, Cedar Creek Lake is near Gun Barrel City and Mabank...which are amazingly trashy, country bumpkin' towns!) I'm traveling with my mother to see her sister (my aunt) for her birthday.
Let me backtrack so you don't think I'm the meanest, most judgemental person ever. Really, I don't mean it negatively that I'm going to a trashy, country bumpkin' town. I'm REALLY SUPER EXCITED! It's an AWESOME place to do some major "junkin'"! My mom and I are definitely going to gather some fun stuff for our new Teapots & What-Nots! (Which, by the way, we will need to, because we are for sure getting a booth at McKinney Trade Days next month! Woo-Hoo!)
So, in honor of my whimsical junkin' weekend (and the fact that I finally finished one of my TpT packs that has been hangin' out on my computer for MONTHS now...really...it has...) I'm throwing a GIVEAWAY!!! YAY!!!
Ready for the prizes? First up is my NEW "1, 2, Measure With My Shoe!" TpT Pack! Yes, it did take me about 3 months to finish...my ADD was really bad with this one...but it's finally done!
This is a cute little project that I used with my kiddos last year, but I was trying to spruce it up a bit before I posted it online. So yes, it took me a while, but it is tried and true, and I love it! I hope you will, too!
The next prize is a fun set of 4 ADORABLE Chalkboard Clothespin Labels from our Etsy store, Teapots & What-Nots! The winner of the giveaway will get to tell me what *CUSTOM* colors she wants! How fun and special is that?! :)
So, now are you ready to enter? There's 3 ways below, one of which is a daily (if you so should choose!) I'll be back home on Sunday, and the drawing will end shortly after. Good luck! I'll be thinking about y'all while I'm on my mini-vaca! :)

Summer Project #1- Book Labels!
For most of us, it's safe to say that summer has officially begun. I have had 2 weeks off, been to a few workshops, and had lots of time to catch up on all those pesky little chores and things that we don't get to during the school year (i.e. dentist, doctors, returning purchases that have been forgotten about, and so on and so forth!).
Now, though, it's time for all those fun projects I've been dreaming about in my head for the past few months! And of course, I'd LOVE to share my work with YOU!
So here goes-- Project #1: "This Book Belongs To..." Labels

I don't know about you all, but I have SO many random books in my classroom library. And believe me, I'm NOT complaining! I LOVE having such a wide assortment for my kiddos to choose from. My only problem, though, is that they come from so many random places. Most of my books are second-hand & used, so most of the time, they have someone else's name written in them. :(
BUT, that's no problem for me, once I get going! My solution, you may ask? Making my own sticky labels to cover up other names and to put my name on! Get's 2 birds with one stone! :)
So here's a quick little break down of my project from the past few days:
Supply List:
- Color Printer
- Full Page Shipping Labels (I used Staples' "White Shipping Labels", compatible with Avery #5165)
- ek Tools "Flourish Square Large Punch" (item #54-30077. I purchased mine from Michael's)
So, now, here are the "official" directions:
Step 1- Fill in name on each label.
Step 2- PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! I can't tell you how many "test sheets" i printed out to make sure that all the sizing was correct and the words were exactly where I wanted them! (And, as a side note, I sent the file to my teammate, and when she printed it, things were a little bit "off", too! So it just shows you that every computer and printer are different!)
Step 3- Practice punching! I flipped the punch over, so I could see exactly what I was punching out. It took me a few tries to get it perfectly punched and to learn how the punch works!
Step 4- Now, I loaded the labels and printed one sheet at a time.
Step 5- I punched out the labels...CAREFULLY! :)
Step 6- I just peeled and stuck them in my books! Easy as pie! :)
Now, just comes the part of sticking them into all my books! I'm probably going to have to budget a few hours this summer to go up to school and stick away! Maybe I can even "con" a few friends to help out one evening.........hmm.......
Okay, ready for the BEST part of it all? I feel SO guilty for not posting in such a long time, and so guilty for not having any GIVEAWAYS in such a long time, that I'm going to have a big one NOW!
**Want to win a free copy of these "This Book Belongs To..." Labels to make your own labels like mine? Here's an EASY, FREE WIN for the first 3 followers: Simply leave a comment below telling me how you're spending your summer! Any projects for next school year? Or are you just resting and relaxing? I'd love to hear about it! Leave your email address, and I will send you a free copy of this file! But hurry! It's only for the first 3 followers who comment!
Happy Thursday! Can't wait to post again soon. (I went to a 2 day Alan November workshop earlier this week, and I've got such great info to share!)
P.S.- I want to give a BIG shout-out to Rebekah, who sent me such a SWEET note through Kontactr while I was writing this post. It TOTALLY made my day, and gave me such inspiration to keep sharing my ideas with you all! :)

What's Better Than A Monday With NO Voice?!
So yes, you read it right...a Monday with NO voice! :(
My day began with a voice, but as the day progressed, the voice slowly went away! I've been battling with this (on and off) for a few months now...not sick, no fever, but lots of chest congestion and my voice keeps going in and out. Ugh!!! Good thing I have my trusty teacher mic! Anyone else out there use one? It's my FAVORITE! No raised voices for me! :)
BUT ANYWAYS....What's better than a Monday with no voice?! How about new followers! I was so happy to log on today and see my new followers! Welcome welcome! AND I'm so close to the big 5-0! And you know what THAT MEANS?!?!?
A GIVEAWAY!!!!!!
So, hype me up, tell your friends, and let's try to get to the big five-oh sometime this week! I guarantee the GIVEAWAY will be WORTH IT! :) I have so many ideas a-brewin'!
And to help us get there faster, here's a little bribe (they always work with our kiddos, right, so why shouldn't they work with adults?!?!)
If you refer me to your friends, and they join as a new follower, both YOU and YOUR FRIEND will earn a free "Dollar Deal" item from my TpT Store or my TN Store! Simply leave a comment below with your referral (ex. "Jillian, I referred ___ who's a new follower!") or with your name (ex. "Jillian, I'm a new follower, referred by ___!"). Also tell me which item you'd like, and where to send it! Easy as that!
If you're a new follower on your own, let me know too! I'd hate for you to miss out on the FREEBIE! :)
Hope everyone is having a great Monday! I'm off to rest my voice with some hot tea and bad TV! :) Perfect way to end the day. Keep checking back to see how close we come, and stop back by tomorrow to see how fun Natural Disasters can be (no not the actual ones...even though we DID have that brush with a tornado last week!)

Publishing Sensory Poetry and CAN YOU GUESS MY POEM?!? GIVEAWAY
So if you made it through my LONG post yesterday, you read about my students' fun sensory poetry (and my new Sensational Sensory Poetry Pack!) After a few weeks of pre-teaching sensory words, prewriting, drafting, and editing, today was the BIG PUBLISHING DAY!
My class had so much fun, and our end products turned out SO great, that I just had to share with you all!
Here we are, turning our final drafts into published work:
And here are a few finished products:
When we had completely transferred our final copies onto our publishing paper, the students then "mounted" their poems onto a colored 1/2 sheet of construction paper. Then, they got a plain white envelope and wrote "can you guess my topic?" I stressed to my kiddos that if they included fantastic, specific sensory words throughout their poems, our readers would be able to guess their topics even without knowing! AND IT WORKED!!! Here we are, making and finishing our envelopes....
After everyone finished publishing, we shared and let other classmates "guess our topics"! We had so much fun!

So much so, that I want to carry the "guess my topic" on to this post! I already gave away 2 complete "Sensational Sensory Poetry Packs" from my last post, but I will give away ONE MORE to the first person to correctly guess the topic of MY sensory poem. Leave your guess and your email in the comment below, and I will post as soon as someone guesses correctly! :) Let's see how fantastic and specific my own poem can be....
